On Monday, a joint press conference was held by the Network for a Free and Equal Vote, coordinated by Roberto Zaccaria, featuring constitutional experts already active in the ‘No’ campaign and various political figures, ranging from AVS to Più Europa (with the support of the CGIL).

The head of FdI’s organisational wing, alongside Montaruli, Kelany and others, acts as a ‘watchdog’ for his MPs against mavericks. ‘For the left, it is indecent that in Italy those who secure one more vote are in charge,’ he says. And a cross appears, drawn by MP Elisabetta Lancellotta. Bignami: ‘Even the opposition voted for the bill.’

This time, the secret ballot has not caused any trouble for the centre-right: with 227 votes in favour and 164 against, the Chamber of Deputies has approved the bill. Elly Schlein and Giuseppe Conte also spoke during the explanation of vote. The only way left to stop the law now is through appeals to the Constitutional Court. The Prime Minister: “We are reintroducing the preferential voting system that has been missing for 30 years.”

“In elected assemblies, representation would be best ensured by purely proportional systems. However, corrective measures may be introduced, such as majority bonuses, which must not, however, alter representation any more than is necessary: that would mean making votes unequal,” says the former president of the Constitutional Court

Barring any major changes by the Constitutional Court, the Stabilicum is set to come into force. From the collection of signatures to the nomination of a candidate for Prime Minister (and the associated issue of the primaries), here is what the political parties will need to take into account before the election.

The majority has passed a vote of confidence in the government, with 226 in favour and 147 against on the first amendment, and 227 in favour and 149 against on the second. The two amendments introduce a preferential voting system with fixed-position list leaders and an increase in the number of signatures required. The third amendment will be voted on tomorrow, whilst final approval is scheduled for Thursday.

The leader of the Fratelli d’Italia group in the Senate has opened up the possibility of early elections, just one day after Meloni had said she would ‘see it through to the end’. And indeed, she later clarified her position: ‘The parliamentary term will run its course’. Today, the government called for a vote of confidence on the electoral bill. Signs that a vote may well be brought forward

The Prime Minister sends a message to her ministers, written entirely in capital letters: the electoral law must be voted on in the Chamber. It passes the first reading in the Chamber of Deputies, with everyone terrified of their leader. She tells Nordio: “Stand for re-election.” The left watches and prepares its response following Conte’s move. But the EU spoils the party on flexibility

No surprises and no mavericks: the majority is committed to a secret ballot, and the Chamber of Deputies has rejected the preliminary constitutionality challenges tabled by the opposition by 229 votes to 151. Consideration of the electoral bill continues, with the final vote (again by secret ballot) scheduled for next week.
