Constitutional Court, the final hurdle

Whilst awaiting the final vote in the Chamber of Deputies, constitutional experts have already prepared their appeal against the electoral law

Academics and former members of the Constitutional Council are preparing to refer the bill to the constitutional judges. Former president Ugo De Siervo: “This bill is the ultimate in constitutional overreach.” Professor Mauro Volpi: “The appeal will be ready by November.” The award, the Prime Minister’s nomination and the rule on preferences are being challenged. Both constitutional experts also argue that the anti-splinter-party provision requires an “abnormal” and “paradoxical” number of signatures to be collected.

If the election were held today

Opinion polls and electoral laws. How much influence does Vannacci have on the centre-right?

According to a SWG poll, the former general continues to gain ground (7.9 per cent), overtaking the League (5.5) and Forza Italia (6.9). Meanwhile, YouTrend has carried out simulations for SkyTg 24 on what would happen if the election were held under the Rosatellum or the Stabilicum: without the National Front, the centre-right would emerge defeated from the broad coalition.

In the Chamber

The Senate has approved the electoral law (with preferential voting). The bill will return to the House of Commons for its third reading.

113 in favour, 71 against and 2 abstentions: the Senate has given the green light to the electoral reform. Sparks flew between Luca Pirondini, leader of the Five Star Movement, and President Ignazio La Russa. Among other things, the text reintroduces preferential voting, which will have to be incorporated into a new vote in the Chamber of Deputies.
