The election in Saxony-Anhalt is an important test not only to gauge support for the AfD but also to assess the effectiveness of the defences against the extremist pincer movement – from both the right and the left – that fuels anti-Semitism. A double test for the future of Germany and indeed of Europe 

The far-right party has secured over 44 per cent of the vote, whilst the CDU has plummeted below 20 per cent. The formation of the next government will be a nail-biting finish.

According to initial projections, the far-right party is expected to exceed 40 per cent. The CDU is predicted to fall below 20 per cent.
