Tajani proposes Matteo Perego as a candidate for mayor of Milan: “A young representative of a city that needs to change”

“We will propose Matteo Perego, a long-serving MP and Milanese business executive, to our allies as the candidate for Milan. We will discuss this with our allies to decide together who the candidate will be.” This was stated by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, upon arriving at the ‘Azzurra Libertà 2026’ event, the three-day gathering organised by Forza Italia’s youth wing in Montesilvano, Abruzzo.

Born in Milan in 1982, Matteo Perego di Cremnago is Under-Secretary of State for Defence and a member of Forza Italia. "He is a young member of the government and a Member of Parliament, active in the security sector with close ties to the police," Tajani continued. “Milan deserves to be led by a young figure who embodies a city that needs to change, focusing on greater security and a different environmental policy, whilst defending its status as the country’s economic capital. We will discuss this with our allies to decide together who the candidate should be,” added the leader of Forza Italia, launching the party’s candidacy for Palazzo Marino. An agreement must now be reached with the allies to arrive at a final decision as soon as possible.

He is not the first name to be mentioned within the centre-right. Foremost among them is Maurizio Lupi, leader of Noi Moderati, whose bid has long been backed by Senate President Ignazio La Russa. It is a pity that, as we report here, his candidacy would be unwelcome to Forza Italia and the Lega. Furthermore, in June, Lega leader Matteo Salvini and Carroccio MEP Silvia Sardone received the most votes at the polling stations organised by the Lega to identify a potential candidate for Mayor of Milan.
