Giorgia Meloni is also among the EU candidates to negotiate with Russia over Ukraine

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is reportedly among a shortlist of five names from which the European Union must choose a mediator to negotiate with Vladimir Putin’s Russia in the peace talks aimed at ending the conflict in Ukraine. This is according to the British newspaper The Telegraph, which reports that Meloni is among a select group of figures who could fulfil this mediating role.

According to diplomatic sources speaking to the London-based newspaper, alongside the Prime Minister, the list also includes Alexander Stubb, the Finnish President, and Petr Pavel, the Czech President. It also includes Mette Frederiksen, the Danish Prime Minister, and Jonas Gahr Store, the Norwegian Prime Minister. However, Pavel and Stubb would appear to be the most suitable candidates, sources told The Telegraph, both because of their geographical proximity and because of the Finnish leader’s close ties to US President Donald Trump and the Czech leader’s background in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.
