According to exit polls in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the AfD stands at 37 per cent. The Left makes gains in Berlin

According to exit polls published by the German weekly Der Spiegel, in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Alternative für Deutschland secured 37 per cent of the vote in Sunday’s state elections in the northern part of the country. The SPD is reported to have secured 35.5 per cent, whilst the CDU managed just 5.5 per cent – its worst result ever. “A disastrous result,” it was described by Chancellor Friederich Merz, leader of the Christian Democrats. He did, however, confirm his intention to remain at the helm of the government: “The country must move forward. We will press ahead with the reforms.” For the AfD, this would mark its second success following its breakthrough in Saxony-Anhalt. "We have a clear mandate to govern" Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, claimed AfD co-leader Tino Chrupalla.

At the same time as the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern election, voting was also taking place in the state of Berlin. Here, according to exit polls again from Der Spiegel, Die Linke is in the lead, standing at 24 per cent. The CDU has secured 20 per cent of the vote, the AfD 16 per cent, the Greens 15 per cent, the SPD 12 per cent and the BSW 5 per cent.
