The phone call from the Vannacci supporters to Roggero: "We are the true right-wingers who stand up for you"

"Hello, Mr Roggero?" On the other end of the line is Rossano Sasso, a supporter of General Vannacci, who is calling Mario Roggero from the benches of the Chamber of Deputies. Roggero is the jeweller sentenced to 14 years and 9 months in prison for killing two robbers and wounding another following the raid on his shop on 28 April 2021. He is calling to express his support, that of General Vannacci and the whole group, and that of his colleagues at Fn: “We are and always will be by your side, convinced that this case concerns not only you but hundreds, thousands of Italians. Our hope is to do everything we can to put an end to this disgraceful situation of which you are a victim. Obviously, we won’t go into the technical details, but for us, defence must always take precedence over offence”, in terms of legal safeguards.

Sasso’s phone call comes after Vannacci publicly expressed his support for Roggero. And after Deputy Prime Minister Salvini today once again called for a pardon for the jeweller. Meanwhile, within FdI and Forza Italia, the stance is much more cautious and wait-and-see, given that a ruling from the Court of Cassation is pending. “It’s not just the request for a pardon; we’ll also be taking other initiatives here in the Chamber of Deputies to stir things up a bit and try to provide answers to this issue which, as I’ve said, affects many Italians,” Sasso explains to Roggero over the phone. He is aware, however, that Futuro Nazionale’s numbers alone will not be enough. “This is our political line; this is the right-wing stance we take. Let’s see if, on the other hand, the centre-right prefers to carry on talking.” The conversation ends with a promise from the Vannacci supporters to visit Ruggero soon. In short, the security showdown on the right has only just begun.
