Spider-Man: Brand New Day
A review of the film by Destin Daniel Cretton, starring Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink and Florence Pugh
It’s Tom Holland’s summer. Telemachus, son of the hero in Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey”, he returns as Spider-Man in this new film which – within the Spider-Man saga, and beyond – has broken every record. With over two billion in global box office takings, it is the most successful Spider-Man film ever; the highest-grossing film of 2026; the eighth highest-grossing film of all time. As if that weren’t enough, Tom Holland married the girl of his dreams (and not just his) this summer: the stunning Zendaya, who wore a marvellous white evening gown embroidered with a spider’s web at the film’s premiere. They were also on the same set for "Odyssey", where she played the goddess Athena. The Guardian adds that the actor, who was paid a staggering $20 million for this latest role in Spider-Man’s red and blue suit, will receive a further $100 million in bonuses – the portion of his remuneration linked to box office performance. Recap of previous episodes: a spell cast by Doctor Strange had caused the world to forget the connection between Peter Parker and Spider-Man. Not even his closest friends and loved ones – his girlfriend MJ and his friend Nel – remember him; sad and lonely, he continues to fight crime. Now the people of New York are fond of him, but it is a fondness that does little to warm the heart. To help with his headaches, he seeks advice from Florence Pugh (Black Widow) and Mark Ruffalo (Hulk).
