On 9 September, the bill will be put to a vote in committee at the Chamber of Deputies. Outside the Chamber, various organisations – including USB, ANPI and Amnesty – will gather for a sit-in to protest against the introduction of the legislation. The Democratic Party senator who voted in favour said: “The protests do not frighten us; we regret them.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs: “Of the ten or so Italians still unaccounted for this morning, there are now three specific cases reported”: Marco Ratto, a goldsmith from Rapallo, and an Italian-Swiss couple. Minister Tajani expresses his condolences. The flood was caused by a glacier calving that poured into the Lhende Khola river. Images of a humanitarian catastrophe

The former Defence Minister and architect of the Ulivo coalition told Il Foglio: “The time has come for Schlein and Conte to talk to each other, looking each other in the eye”, starting with foreign policy and the leadership of the coalition. To the Democrats: “Enough of these shenanigans. The PD’s faction leaders seem to want to weaken the party leader”

“The moment I hear the word ‘taxes’, I break out in hives,” says the Foreign Secretary. Senator Borghi of the Carroccio responds to the Foreign Secretary: “If Tajani has other priorities, let him say so.” Costa (FI): “Demagogic naivety from the Lega”

Roberto Speranza provokes: “Primaries would be an own goal. Let’s put an elderly partisan or a newly-of-age young person forward as the prime ministerial candidate.” But this is merely the latest in a long series of outbursts on the subject. September is here and the left have still not decided who to vote for, how to vote and, above all, whether to vote at all

The leader of the M5S has written a manifesto-style letter on ‘woke’ culture and the left. He is setting out his position ahead of the September primaries, with the evergreen ‘no’ to rearmament. Malpezzi: ‘Use it to talk about inequalities’. Sensi: ‘They jump on the debate of the moment and attack the PD’. Quartapelle: ‘Second thoughts on “woke”? I preferred the one on the Superbonus’.

The coordinator of Futuro Nazionale: “The Carroccio leader wouldn’t stand a chance of being elected with us. But he’ll go down in the general election; he’s now on a par with Renzi. The Lega is facing an irreversible crisis; with us, it’s merely a ‘marriage of convenience’. If Giorgia Meloni wants to win, she’ll inevitably have to reach an agreement with us”

The PD, AVS and M5S have tabled a joint motion to be put to the vote during Minister Giorgetti’s statement on the budgetary deviation for defence and energy expenditure: the ‘no arms’ stance is adopted and the reformists protest. The majority, however, amends the text on the SAFE: funding military expenditure becomes a possibility and, should it be utilised, it is envisaged that it will also be used for ‘security’. The Chamber will vote only on the majority resolution
