As well as the outbreak of war in the Middle East, there is another factor driving up costs for airlines – though in this case, only European ones. We are talking about the ETS, the mechanism designed to put a price on pollution, but which is having an increasingly significant impact on European carriers

The price of gas is already enough to discourage its use, but the ETS further increases the cost of energy. The EU defends the system partly because of the revenue it generates and partly because of the financial interests linked to the emissions trading market

After a day of deadlock, the European Council has asked the Commission to reassess the impact of ETS2, the scheme that will charge for emissions from transport and heating from 2028. Italy did not secure a postponement. No agreement has been reached on the 2028–2034 EU budget.

“If we do not develop structural, long-term solutions to high energy prices, we risk becoming increasingly at the mercy of emergencies.” Giorgia Meloni once again highlights energy costs as one of the key issues affecting European and Italian competitiveness

Increasing the energy supply whilst also speeding up the authorisation process for green energy plants: this is the request from Viale dell’Astronomia, which is pressing for a technical expert. “Cingolani? It is not for us to comment on specific candidates,” says Vice-President Aurelio Regina. The minister’s doubts as he rejects any speculation
