Salvini opts for the elective congress (as expected). Romeo’s trial
The same delegates, “but it won’t be a sham congress. I hope someone else stands as a candidate,” the secretary said in his defence at the end of the Lega’s Federal Congress. Zaia and Fedriga were absent with valid reasons.
As widely reported, the extraordinary congress of the Lega announced on Sunday by Matteo Salvini in Pontida will be an elective congress. The secretary himself made this clear at the end of the Lega’s Federal Council meeting convened in Via Bellerio, Milan. “I reiterate that I will seek the confidence of my community so that we can focus exclusively on the problems facing Italians, rather than on internal party controversies that are of little interest,” said Salvini. Will anyone stand as a candidate? “I’m counting on it; I’m waiting for someone else to stand,” added the Deputy Prime Minister.
The Milan meeting, however, turned into a telephone trial of Massimiliano Romeo, the party’s Senate leader and (together with Attilio Fontana) leader of the ‘rebellious’ northerners. It was also decided that the delegates authorised to vote would be the outgoing members. Luca Zaia and Massimiliano Fedriga were absent with leave, both being engaged in official duties.
