The former prime minister comments on the rift that has emerged within the PD between reformists and pacifists over defence spending: “They need to make a decision on foreign policy. For now, they’re just in a mess.” The father of the Olive Tree coalition seems to have a clearer vision than the coalition itself
“This broad coalition is a mess.” Romano Prodi, twice Prime Minister and founder of the Olive Tree coalition, comments in Il Foglio on the week in which the SAFE initiative and aid to Kyiv created a rift within the PD and alienated the M5S, culminating in the broad coalition’s resolution being rejected by the PD’s reformists.
Prodi has just one request: “They need to make a decision on foreign policy. At the moment they’re just in a mess – one says one thing, another says something else, and that’s it. But they’ll have to make a decision eventually.” Then, however, he backtracks: “Actually, I haven’t been speaking out for a while.” To avoid controversy? “No, no, but not for the sake of ‘avoiding controversy’ either. I’m in a period of reflection.”
