We feel Italy’s support for Ukraine every day, and we are grateful for it. We see it in the government’s decisions, in the humanitarian aid and life-saving assistance, in diplomatic efforts and in the many expressions of solidarity coming from Italian society. Over recent years, Italy has proved itself to be a reliable partner, capable of standing by Ukraine even in the most difficult times.
We greatly appreciate the consistency of the Italian government’s stance, particularly at such a complex time on the international stage. The words spoken by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Parliament – “Surrender is not peace, it is conquest” – express a concept with which we wholeheartedly agree. A just and lasting peace requires firm conditions that prevent the recurrence of aggression and guarantee the security of Ukraine and the whole of Europe.
We naturally follow the Italian political debate closely. We are aware of the differing viewpoints amongst the political parties, both in the government and the opposition, regarding how to support Ukraine and the prospects for peace. It is normal in a democracy for there to be debate and differing opinions. We hope that this debate will continue, based on a number of fundamental points, starting with Russia’s responsibility for having started this war.
For us, it is essential to maintain a clear view of reality. Russia has invaded a sovereign country and continues to target its cities, civilian infrastructure and population. Recognising this aggression for what it is, correctly attributing responsibility and upholding the principles of international law are matters that concern everyone, regardless of political affiliation.
Ukraine’s security is closely linked to that of Italy and the whole of Europe. Forcing Ukraine to capitulate would risk encouraging further aggression and bringing the war even closer to Europeans’ doorsteps. Drones, ballistic missiles and hybrid threats have already profoundly changed the way we must think about our security. These are dangers that know no borders and require greater awareness on everyone’s part.
We believe that this awareness must also grow amongst the Italian public. Understanding what is happening in Ukraine today means gaining a better understanding of the challenges facing Europe in the coming years. Support for Ukraine therefore also represents an investment in the security and stability of our continent.
There is also an aspect of the relationship between our countries that is particularly close to our hearts: the human dimension. Over recent years, we have experienced first-hand the generosity, compassion and sincerity of the Italian people. Many Ukrainian families, forced to leave their homes because of the war, have found a warm welcome, understanding and solidarity in Italy. Many Italians have opened the doors of their homes, helped our children settle into schools and offered support during the most difficult times. These are gestures we will never forget.
It is on this basis of human closeness that we would like to continue building the future of relations between Italy and Ukraine. Direct links between regions, cities and local authorities, twinning schemes, exchanges between universities and schools, cultural collaborations and joint reconstruction projects can further strengthen a bond that has already proven to be deep-rooted.
When an Italian community establishes a direct relationship with a Ukrainian community, friendships, projects and mutual understanding are forged that endure over time. It is a form of practical diplomacy, built on people, which we consider invaluable.
We therefore view Italy’s support with gratitude and confidence. We know that the political debate will continue and that there may be differences of opinion. We hope that there will continue to be a shared understanding of how important it is to achieve a just peace, founded on respect for international law and capable of guaranteeing the security of future generations.
Italy has stood by us during some very difficult years. It is a bond that we feel deeply and that we wish to strengthen, so that it may continue to unite our countries even when the war is finally over.
