Democrat Fetterman springs a pleasant surprise on Trump supporters, leaving his own camp on edge

Pennsylvania’s Democratic Senator John Fetterman made a surprise appearance at the convention organised by Donald Trump in Texas, introducing the speech by his Republican colleague Dave McCormick via a pre-recorded video. “I am speaking to you today because I am a common-sense Democrat, opposed to the extremes of socialism and the anti-American way of life,” he said in the video, confirming what appears to be an irreversible rift with his party. Elected in 2022 on a platform centred on protecting trade unions and jobs in the manufacturing sector – having survived a stroke during the election campaign and been hospitalised for depression shortly after his victory – he began to distance himself from his party’s line with the outbreak of the war in Gaza. A staunch supporter of Israel, in April he opposed two measures put forward by the majority of Democratic senators that would have blocked the sale of arms to the Jewish state. Tensions with the rest of the party have also escalated over certain domestic policy positions: he voted both to end last year’s federal shutdown and to confirm Markwayne Mullin as Secretary of Homeland Security.

Despite all this, Fetterman has made it clear that he has no intention of switching to the Republican Party, as he believes the Democrats are better at defending trade union rights and those of the LGBT community. He has, however, drawn a red line: he will leave the party should it become ‘anti-Israel’. Currently, only two in ten Democrats in Pennsylvania have a favourable opinion of Fetterman, in contrast to 2024, when he was supported by 74 per cent of voters; conversely, he is highly regarded by Republicans, amongst whom he has an approval rating of 73 per cent. Furthermore, many analysts believe that Fetterman stands no chance of winning a potential Democratic primary in 2028: this, too, may be why he is tempted to join the Republicans.
