Garavaglia tells Il Foglio: “I might stand as a candidate at the Lega Congress”
The former Minister for Tourism, who is close to Fontana and Giorgetti, is set to stand as a candidate at the extraordinary party congress on 24 and 25 October in Milan. His aim is to rally support from the northern regions and capitalise on the discontent towards Salvini. “The vote? It can only be by secret ballot.”

There may (perhaps) be a candidate. Massimo Garavaglia could stand as a candidate at the Lega’s extraordinary congress. The senator, a former Minister for Tourism and a close ally of Attilio Fontana and Giancarlo Giorgetti, told Il Foglio: “We might well stand as candidates. I like the light-hearted spirit of it. Yes, perhaps we’ll stand as candidates and have a bit of fun.” It is a candidacy that could shake things up, even if only as a statement, even if only to show that there is a different side to the Lega. And to gauge support. The congress is scheduled for 24 and 25 October in Milan. Salvini has always said he is not afraid. If there are multiple candidates, a secret ballot is inevitable. Votes from the regional governors and the north could coalesce around Garavaglia. The vote? Garavaglia says: “It’s clear that it can only be a secret ballot.” There is another ‘Hidalgo’.
