Monti meets Vannacci in Cernobbio: “I see in you the narrative, rhetoric and spirit of fascism”

In the end, the debate between Mario Monti and Roberto Vannacci took place in Cernobbio; the topic was Europe, and starting from Europe, Monti developed his argument in line with the Futuro Nazionale programme, discussing the effects of sovereignty on the economy and the fascist aspects he perceives in the vision of government put forward by the General and his party colleagues. “You swore an oath on the Constitution,” Monti said to Vannacci, “but if you become a minister or head of government – and swear the oath again – you will blatantly violate it in many respects through your programme, which also contravenes the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union.”

As for the recent investigations launched by the military prosecutor’s office into Futuro Nazionale, Monti said: “I am not in a position to address an issue as weighty as the re-establishment of the National Fascist Party, but on reading its manifesto, one aspect of fascism – the most insidious one – is already underway: it is probably not the re-establishment of the National Fascist Party itself, but I see in it the re-establishment of the narrative, the rhetoric and the spirit of fascism”. He concluded: "I would view this with far greater concern than the actual re-establishment of the Fascist Party – which I do not wish to see happen – and, old as I am, if there is any way to prevent you from continuing down this path, I will devote my very last ounce of energy to doing so."
