The future lies in AI

If a government’s 1,413 days are judged by the results these days are likely to yield over the next 10 years, it can be argued that, alongside the undeniable merit of not having delivered on much of what was promised in previous years, the Meloni government is running out of steam somewhat. The future lies in the impact that artificial intelligence has and will have on our society and on people’s work. Artificial intelligence is already a wave and is set to become a tsunami. It is both a great opportunity and a great risk, and for those in government there are a thousand considerations to be made; how can it be restricted and managed (Tommaso Nannicini wrote a brilliant article on this in ItalyPost)? How can we assist those who lose their jobs in finding new employment? How can we reform the public sector (bureaucracy, healthcare, education) to make it less costly and more efficient? Alongside sensitive issues such as the location of data centres or the use of AI to build a modern defence system (see Ukraine). This is where the future lies. Let us hope someone in Rome realises this soon.
