His secret? Do nothing

The very fact that even someone like me is being asked to assess the Meloni government speaks volumes about how difficult it is to form a clear view on the matter. All in all, I would award Giorgia Meloni a ‘five’ – a pass, though not a resounding one: she was elected for saying some appalling things, but then she did not actually do them. The fact that she is not a ‘woman of action’, that she is all talk and little substance, and that she embodies all the traits that typically cause citizens to lose faith in politics—if not to openly oppose it—actually leads me to appreciate Meloni more than those who say one thing and then, unfortunately, do it. It is evident that Meloni has a university education, as she has understood that in Italy the secret to remaining in power is to do nothing while generating considerable noise. It is regrettable that she surrounds herself with individuals who do not meet her standards: fugitives, incompetents, and the dregs. Her government is an omelette made from leftovers, but the eggs were past their best and the scraps had been in the fridge for days and were by now ready for the bin. “Better than nothing,” he says.
