Further action was required

The Meloni-Giorgetti-Crosetto-Tajani and Salvini government has navigated a difficult world, with a war in Europe that has claimed two million dead and wounded, tensions with the United States, conflicts in the Middle East, competition from China, an ageing country and an ageing Europe, and a boorish domestic element. It has done so with a dignity which, precisely because of this, it cannot claim in the Ukrainian case, and with seriousness when it comes to the accounts. That world, however, demanded more: broadening an inadequate political class rather than chasing after Renzi’s ‘magic circle’, and taking on a proactive role in Europe rather than merely containing the anti-European sentiment that existed within it. ‘Fratelli d’Italia’ evokes ‘fraternité’, Mazzini’s anthem and that of the Republic, but it loses its meaning if read as a call to a past that no longer exists and will not return, helping to fuel illusions and self-deception, as well as a harmful discourse on security. Moreover, if families do not have children of their own, ‘brothers’ are not enough; adoptions become essential and must therefore be actively sought, opening the way to the future. In the name of the future, we needed to find a way to speak hard truths without killing hope – which is extremely difficult. It is even more so now with Vannacci, who truly embodies the threats of which the government has been accused.
