Director-General Sergio is leaving Rai (but not Rai San Marino). The case

A new position at Rai is about to become vacant, opening up a ‘San case’: Roberto Sergio, Rai’s director-general, is stepping down from his post and leaving the organisation on 30 September. He is retiring but wishes to retain his position as Director-General of Rai San Marino. This has been confirmed by Sergio – dubbed ‘General Patton’ by Il Foglio – the chief executive who paved the way for the right wing at Rai, and the predecessor of Giampaolo Rossi, the friend with whom he took turns in the role. Sergio holds two posts: that of Director-General of Rai and, as stated on the Rai website, that of ‘interim Director-General of San Marino RTV’.

Sergio confirms that he is stepping down but will retain his role in San Marino because “he was appointed by the RTV board and his term is not due to expire”. For Sergio, it is feasible; at Rai, however, they say no. His departure has a consequence. Sergio was the director-general appointed by Sergio (and the League). The post of Rai Director-General is once again up for grabs for Rossi. There had been talk of Simona Agnes, the Rai chairwoman whom Tajani and Gianni Letta would have liked to see in the role.
