Italy suspends the Schengen Agreement with Spain following the migrant crisis in Ceuta

The Home Office has ordered the closure of the sea and air borders with Spain. The possibility, which had already been mooted since yesterday afternoon, was considered following the arrival of around 60,000 migrants in Ceuta.

According to the government, the decision was taken following the latest intelligence findings, analysed in particular by the Committee for the Analysis of Immigration and Border Security, which Minister Matteo Piantedosi chaired this morning at the Ministry of the Interior. Furthermore, following a telephone discussion between Minister Piantedosi and his French counterpart, Laurent Nuñez, both agreed on the need to step up controls along the land border between the two countries, within the framework of cooperation agreements between police forces previously signed by France and Italy.
