Meloni calls the centre. A discreet move to encourage a meeting between Calenda, Picierno and Marattin

Giorgia Meloni is committed to the future of the centre, understood as the Third Pole. According to Il Foglio, for several days now the Prime Minister has been working discreetly to ensure that the parties that could form the centre – the centre outside the coalitions – can reach an agreement, drawing closer to Carlo Calenda (whose party is among those exempt from collecting signatures to stand in the forthcoming elections). Meloni would welcome an alliance between Calenda, Luigi Marattin and Pina Picierno, and has been in contact with those involved. Not to form an alliance – that would be untrue – but for other political reasons. Firstly: to seek potential allies for the future, in order to operate from the centre. Secondly: to have a force capable of drawing votes away from the left. Thirdly: to create space for a constructive opposition. Vannacci is gaining ground. But if the centre were to grow as well, that would not be bad news. Not only for Meloni, but also for Italy, which is seeking alternatives to Vannacci’s agenda.
