Giorgetti: “Carlo Comporti at ESMA. We’ve won”

Carlo Comporti is set to become the next chair of ESMA, the European equivalent of Consob. Giorgetti announced this in the Chamber of Deputies: “We’ve won. We’ve been working on this for four months.” An Italian is set to lead one of Europe’s most important supervisory authorities. “Although the process is not yet complete, today’s decisive vote is a recognition of both the individual and Italy. ESMA, in fact, plays a strategic role and is set to develop into the European equivalent of Consob in the future,” continued the Minister for the Economy and Finance: “I am pleased with today’s result, which is the fruit of the working method we have adopted since the start of this parliamentary term and confirms our country’s and the government’s restored credibility in Europe.” Comporti’s appointment to the body that oversees European financial markets was backed by the Minister for the Economy and Finance, together with the other finance ministers, through telephone calls in support of Comporti, organised on the sidelines of Eurogroup meetings.
