Irresolution? Not likely! Only the impolitic can mistake for hesitation this gritty attitude of Our Great Leader. Never before as today, having reached the peak of his Roman maturity, has Silvio Berlusconi shown himself to be the formidable politician that he is. Deaf to the demanding, blind to the exhibitionists, ungrateful with the untrustworthy, unreachable for the over friendly and too realistic to tolerate any form of Don Quixote-like heroism. All he needed was to make Gianfranco Fini understand that youth does not return, that it was in his own interest to soften his pre-emptive acrimony to the practical needs of the People of Freedom [Popolo della libertà]. Among these needs is the right of succession to the throne acquired with his agreement to disband his Party, the National Alliance [Alleanza nazionale]. Once this had been achieved, positioning the Pdl at the avante garde of the simplification achieved by the majority will of CaW (Cav. Berlusconi + W Veltroni, if that is not already clear), Berlusconi has put to the sword every nuisance and every desire, u-turned on some promises, but showed himself to be the very incarnation of decisiveness as an autarch ignoring the rule book, yet one of genius. Let us take the case of the electoral anti-abortion list sprouting from this newspaper. The Cav. is right when he says that for him everything had been clear from the beginning: the reply to the request to join the Cdl list is “No”. As Berlusconi would say “No” because it does not help me to win and because it does not help me to be understood by “my people” who are paying too much tax. This does not concern me.” Polite from the beginning, avoiding the issue even, but crystal clear both in public and in private. How can one not say he is wrong? It is as if, with the roles reversed, a Foglio Party with opinion poll ratings of 40% and ready to regain for itself the majority of Italians in the name of an historic Pro-Life battle, were to receive point blank the following request: “We are the political virgins of the Pdl Party and we would like to join with you to run for election throughout the land together with the redheaded girl from Big Brother and to make speeches about Visco and Padoa-Schioppa and about the Bridge over the Straits of Messina. Come off it. Pull the other one. (trad. RN)
