Far from being a serious matter, Italy’s first two party system election campaign offers us a quantity of trickery, ridiculousness, role swapping, misrepresentations and second thoughts that if they were to be placed in line would reveal a sensational exhibition of post politics. But who cannot say that at the end something better may be born of all this and such may perhaps happen with the case of Alitalia/AirFrance, and for which was sufficient a daring Berlusconian idea. This idea was the fantastic roped together team of AliCav.-Banca Intesa, even if Cavaliere Berlusconi freely admitted that “my own children wouldn’t dream of joining it, because the Left would only make politics out of it”. Yet this idea broke up a Franco-Italian courtship which had been crystallized for years and has thus been rudely shattered. (translation by Richard Newbury)
