Gianfranco Fini would be the perfect Speaker of the House of Representatives. He has managed in a gentlemanly way to put an end to the Ciarrapico Affair, in which the Pdl candidate had praised Mussolini. He had done this without impeding Ciarrapico’s candidature while he, Fini, saved his own honour. The publisher had taken back the word “scullion” that he had used about him – and Fini had done it all covering up adequately a certain fudging and a communication failure between his own party The National Alliance and Silvio Berlusconi. Yesterday the ex-Foreign Minister presented himself to the public, in Rome, letting himself be interviewed by three important journalists and avoided every attempt to make him descend from that elevated seat above good and evil that evidently he already feels he occupies. In the interview he was neither calm nor animated, Fini was in a hurry to draw a line under the recent disputes over candidatures – “let’s move on, this is the moment to be talking about political matters” – to then be able to serenely laying into the house of the Europopulists.
